SHAPes to pLease.

CoLOURS tO fLy.

The aim of the game is to control your golf ball.
Control your golf ball and you control your game.
Controlling your golf ball is a simple matter of blending the path and alignment of the clubface through impact.

Set up the shapes above and you have given yourself the best possible chance of blending these key impact factors.

1.RIGHT TO LEFT?
2.LEFT TO RIGHT?
3.DEAD STRAIGHT?

The most difficult to produce?
The simple answer must surely be the STRAIGHT one!

In an effort to play golf properly as golfers like to term it, are you effectively attempting to produce the toughest and arguably most impossible shot in golf?

How many of you have or believe they intentionally can hit a golf ball dead straight anyway?

I guarantee you its almost impossible to strike a golf ball with absolutely no side spin what so ever, seriously, just think for a few seconds how utterly proposterous such an act must be. The fact that we stand to the side of the golf ball and swing the golf club into a circle to the side of the target line is evidence enough that the clubface is in fact in the process of closing through impact. Now think logically, if the clubface is closing (aiming right of the target line before impact/ aiming along the target line at impact/ aiming to the left of the target line after impact) and swinging on a path from inside the target line (the side of the target line the player is standing on) then the ball will be imparted with predominantly more right to left spin. The resulting ball flight is of course a natural draw. For the golf ball to fly dead straight the angle of the clubs approach would have to be perfect for the club being used. In basic terms, the angle of the clubs approach combined with the clubs loft is ones only hope of producing the counter active backspin required to strike the golf ball dead straight.

Thats 3 key impact elements perfectly combined:

CLUB FACE ALIGNMENT
CLUB HEAD PATH
ANGLE OF THE CLUB HEADS APPROACH

For the ball to fly dead straight, all 3 of these factors must be perfectly blended to create the right amount of side versus backspin.

Sounding simple?

So whats with this straight shot?

Its a fantasy, no tour player on this green earth has the ability to strike consistently dead pure straight shots with the regularity of a robot (even Tiger!). To seriously aim to strike such perfectly flighted shots on a regular basis would be ridiculously machine like and emotionally pointless. As human beings we can never expect such consistency.

As a teacher of this game I am constantly faced with the same daily task of convincing my pupils of the great difficulty and short comings of attempting to play straight shots. The same typical reply continually brings a smile to my face, 'Please lets just stick to hitting it straight first then when Im good at that we can move onto shaping it'.

Still want to hit it straight?

Why would you, when you're naturally shaping it anyway.
We all have a natural tendancy to shape our golf shots with more right to left or left to right spin, thats a fact. Learning to first understand what causes your own ball flight tendencies is the first step to controlling it. With control of the elements that cause your ball to fly as it does you have become a master of your own ball flight, you have taken control of your golf ball.

So as you can see, the game of golf is about controlling your golf ball.
Control is about knowing exactly what's going to happen before it actually happens.
If I asked you to spin your golf ball with left to right spin you would know its a simple matter of swinging the golf club on a line to the left of the golf ball and the direction the club face is aiming.
If I asked you to spin your golf ball with right to left spin you would do the exact opposite, its that simple.
Now if I asked you to strike the next shot dead straight what would you do?

PANIC?

Play from the line and you effectively become a master of the line.

FEeL for Force/ a PiTChiNG Lesson.

Take a closer look at the images 4 and 5.

Notice the decrease in the angle formed between the left arm and club shaft as Darryn transfers the force of the swinging club into the downswing. The softness of his hands and arms combined with the trust he has in the formation of his hands on the club, allows him to create the desired down cock or lag with the club head in the downswing. This lag is the key to a great ball strikers ability to repeatedly strike the ball with such precision and fluent accuracy from the centre of the clubface.

The lower body is simply moving to support the free swinging action of the hands and arms.

Darryn controls the speed and pace of his arm swing beautifully throughout.

JoBERg OPen 2009

I have recently returned from a two week trip to South Africa where I accompanied my good friend and rising star Darryn Lloyd whilst he was competing in the Joburg Open (European Tour) and the African Open (Sunshine Tour). It was a prime opportunity to study the games leading professionals and really see how my teenage friend would fare against the cream of the winter seasons crop. Playing in his first European Tour event and first as a Sunshine Tour member he was more than eager to show some flair and take his shot at lighting up the stage he will one day surely own.

With rounds of 73, 70 for 143 +1 he was bitterly disappointed to of missed the cut but still walked away with a fresh wealth of insight, understanding, confidence and self belief. He had seen, challenged and compared his talents with some of the best in the world and quite clearly assured himself of his own prospect.

So what makes this kid so special?

Having known DazZ for the past 5 years I can tell you the kid has always had talent, he is the woW factor when witnessed striking a golf ball for the first time. Even at the highest level guys are beginning to stand back and take note of his exceptional talents for distance with accuracy, strike with flair and expression with attitude.

But what puts this dude in such a unique bracket is his understanding of what makes all things DazZ GoLf go tick.

He has the ability to correct his own faults anytime anyplace, he can easily recognise a developing issue through the language of his ball flight. With a clear understanding of the facts presented in front of him on every shot, he can relate such effects to the position and shape of his body in the setup. Such an understanding of the fundamentals that shape and control everything within the swing means DazZ has the added advantage over his more technical competitors, the guys who readily litter the Tour circuits the golfing world over. He can easily and now naturally first identify their weakness's as far as grip, stance, posture or general setup then work out exactly what their common bad shot will naturally be. Through identification of their weak address positions or their lack of respect for the basic fundamentals, he actually steps up to a whole new level of confidence over them all.

In Darryns world there is absolutely no room for technical in swing moves or crazy in vogue ideas that typically stem from a need to create a compensation for a weak or less than efficient address position. What he now has is total control over all that really matters, he has a complete understanding of the laws at impact.

Which leads me to the core foundation of my findings this week.

Having now visited numerous Tours including both the European and Nationwide, I have become increasingly frustrated, saddened and sometimes amused to find so many players seemingly attempting to grove a compensation. The sights at the Joburg Open has again confirmed an increasing amount of players attempting to carve a career in this game while adopting far from efficent basics. The range at both events was filled with guys working on a wide variety of in swing moves, feelings, positions and ideas, all in search of that elusive word 'consistency'.

So I asked the question, 'How many could explain the exact facts presented before them on every shot? How many had a clear understanding of what the clubhead was doing through impact and its resulting effect on their golf balls flight?'

Probably 5%.

I must of wittnessed at least 3 guys hit shots right of their target line from an inside swing path before then expressing the shot as an over the top shoulder action. Such a move had clearly not occurred and the simple fault was in fact no more than an overly strong left hand position on the club. Though one must say, on viewing the vast majourity of these players it soon became quite evident the stronger than neutral left hand position was in fact the most common theme on tour.

So I now ask myself; 'Is this the in vogue way?'

It appears to me the leading players of today have become obsessed with a swing style that aims to eradicate or limit the need for hand action in favor of a more body oriented release through impact. The term 'Cover the shot' has almost certainly grown out of this notion. In seeking to lead with the upper body through the hitting area, the modern player is turning aggressively and feeling as if they are leaving the hands behind through impact, they are simply attempting to limit the speed of the hands through impact in an effort to eliminate the shot that turns left. What crazes me most about this entire episode is the fact that in an effort to limit the speed of the hands they are in fact moving towards a grip that actually increases the speed of them. If you turn your hands to the right on the club (a strong position) then you effectively make them want to release or rotate faster at the bottom of the swing. If you're going to turn your upper body through the shot aggressively then you need to be sure the clubface isn't going to be left behind so resulting in an open face at impact. Such a tendancy is resulting in players slowly developing a much stronger than neutral grip on the club. The result is a shot that consistently starts right of target and then either stays there or turns violently to the left in flight. Their reactions within the swing are simply to that of a feeling with the bigger muscles rather than an effective response to a free flowing action of the hands and arms.

The games leading players are slowly forming two distinct groups, one of muscle bound body release players each living in fear of the days when they played with a most destructive hook. Then Im afraid to say is a seemingly dying breed of free flowing hands and arm swingers, the swings that creative shot making was born out of.

SWing StYLER........

We all have our own unique style of swing, a great coach appreciates this and will work solely on providing the player with the ability to shape and continually maintain it through a sound understanding of the fundamental laws that control it.

So tell me what are you working on? (Don't you just love that question?)

Now what's the only answer I should ever be looking for?

CONTROLLING THE FLIGHT OF THE GOLF BALL!

How do you control the flight of the golf ball?

THROUGH A LOGICAL UNDERSTANDING OF THE FUNDAMENTAL LAWS OF IMPACT.

Which are?

- The alignment of the club face at the point of impact.
- The swinging path of the club head through impact.
- Angle of the club heads attack into impact.

So how do we best control these laws?

SIMPLY THROUGH UNDERSTANDING THE INFLUENCE OF THE BODY POSITIONS IN THE ADDRESS.

But which elements of the address has the greatest influence over these impact laws?

The CLUB FACE must be square at address to have any chance of returning to the same square position at impact.

The HANDS must be perfectly blended as one unit to form a neutral hold for the individual. From here the entire quality of the setup will develop.

And finally, the SHOULDERS must be perfectly square to the target line. As its the shoulders that have the greatest influence over the path of the club through impact.

Through a deep appreciation and great respect for these fundamentals, one can go on to fully explore his or her individual talent for swinging a golf club, striking a golf ball and ultimately getting creative with their ball flight.

PhilosophiES.

As a coach and student of this great game my sole purpose is to provide the pupil with the knowledge and understanding of the laws of impact and the resulting influence on the golf balls flight.

Through simple adjustments to the position of the body in the address I can easily adjust the effective condition of the club face through impact, then giving me total control of the golf balls resulting flight.

All I will ever do is shape the pupil into a position at address that will allow maximum potential for creativity through impact

From a sound base or set of foundations, the art of this game is simply the reaction to a target.

Miguel Angel Carbello.

The images below were taken proceeding the 2nd round of the 2008 Miccosukee Championship. Taken as the result of a chance meeting with Miguel's caddy Juan Lopez who so kindly provided me with shelter during a freak Miami shower. On discovering Juan's position in the game I quickly fired the same question I had been firing at every caddy that week, 'How many players have you come across that can and do work the ball from left to right and right to left and will?'

The now common 'very few to any player' answer quickly cemented a shared passion for the art of shot making and creative golf. He was in full support and shared a keen interest in my mission to re-apply the true fundamentals of this game. Ball flight control from understanding and appreciation of the key basics that ultimately control it. We liked very much what each had to say and continued until the arrival and introduction of Miguel.

Himself very much a natural feel player, growing up in Argentina surrounded by raw flair and a unique sense of instinct for playing with his ball flight he had developed what I like to term, a creative reflex. While such a skill is hugely beneficial to a player, it can go a long way towards disguising and shadowing some real issues that go for a great period of time unnoticed until eventual cracks begin to crumble under the rigour of the tournament spotlight. His ability to manipulate the club within the swing and square the face through impact has clearly saved him on many occasion. His exceptional feel and awareness for the club face within the swing has clearly diverted his attention away from what actually causes the need for such a skill in the first place. As a result his basic fundamentals have fallen out of sink, so causing still further problems as a result.

Within the action of swinging a golf club the hands have the greatest power over everything. While they continue to control it all, they can only go so far in an effort to save anything.

Notice the poorly blended hands.
Right hand is turned to much to the right on the club.

Looking down the line notice the open shoulders.

Hands aren't blended on the club.
Lack of well defined shapes in the address.

Notice how top heavy he looks.
Fails to really get himself grounded into the address.
Looks weak/ open shoulders.

So from the initial analysis you can easily see where Miguel's bad shot is coming from. If the hands shape the shot and the body directs it he has little hope of sending it down his target line with any kind of consistency. From this shoulder alignment he is sending his shots left and with such a strong right hand position he's fighting the club face from turning over and sending the ball straight left in flight.

My advise to Miguel was to simply adjust his shoulder alignment to feel more closed in order to square them up. Making an essential grip change at such a late stage would of proved disastrous. The resulting shoulder adjustment was enough to direct his ball flight with much more accuracy and allow Miguel the confidence to really start committing to his body line swing.

He went onto shoot 70 and survive the cut line.

SMARTY pants.

The smart golfer will be the golfer who gives up his efforts to control his swing and become solely concerned with controlling his golf ball, allowing his natural swing to unfold under the constant shaping of the basic fundamentals:

CLUBface
Hands
Shoulders
Hips
Knees
Feet
Shape
TARGET

Live and breathe by these elements in learning to shape ones swing with the LAWS of IMPACT.

Take the time to think logically about the art of striking a golf ball towards a target.
Why not simply see your TARGET.
Picture the shot you INSTINCTIVELY FEEL is best suited to the TARGET.
Align the CLUBFACE perfectly square to the TARGET.
Lean the shaft SQUARE to the CLUBFACE.
Place the HANDS on the grip to FORM ones NEUTRAL HOLD on the golf club.
Properly ALIGN the SHOULDERS to match SQUARE to the HANDS and CLUBFACE.
ALIGN the HIPS SQUARE to the SHOULDERS.
FEET SQUARE to the HIPS and TARGET LINE.

Now simply open or close the alignment of the feet relative to the target line remembering to move the ball slightly forward for the open stance and slightly further back for the closed alignment. With the clubface still square you are ready to simply give up any control of the in swing movements and feel the force of the free swinging club.

These two shots are simply the only 2 shots you will ever need.

Attempting to strike a golf ball straight is like trying to draw a perfect circle with a pencil while leaning on a rock.

It's not happening.

The only way to successfully say hi to your game is with trust for the basics set above and understand how each one influences the results you will find at impact. And remember, the only way to read the results is through understanding the BALL FLIGHT LAWS out there in front of you.

THE Process

So you decide to drive your car from point A to point B. How do you complete the journey with such ease and minimal frustration?

Simple, you focus on the journey/ the road ahead of you and never once find yourself wrapped up in the potential complications of gear changes, hand, wrist and arm movements, foot and leg positions and so on. You simply have trust in your car and the instincts you have developed through time on the road.

What we as golfers so easily fail to realise and commonly take for granted are the basic fundamentals that all of us as road users have so much trust in. Four wheels, brakes, seats, steering wheel and an engine/ clubface, hands, shoulder alignment etc, etc. These basics are the most vital to your success as both a golf course and road user and accomplished driver of an automobile. With these basic requirements consistently in place on every journey, all one has to do in order to be successful is simply focus on the target and have a clearly pictured route to it. Remain focussed on the journey and leave the controlling elements to the basics of setup and human instinct.

wrong to LEFt /// LEFt to right

I have recently returned from a trip to the States where I have been assisting my good friend Steve Bourbon while working with his star pupil Chris Nallen. The core of my trip was centered around the sunshine state of Florida and Boynton Beach before heading down to Miami for the Miccosukee Championship. So my journey began with three straight afternoons of golfing wisdom at the home of Mr Bob Toski. As we shared a few cool bottles of Heiniken I quickly began to cement the core purpose of my journey. To prove to ones self and sport there is a severe lack of truely creative shot makers striving for the highest honors in this great game. I posed the question, 'How effectively are the Nationwide Tours young guns adopting the skills to truely play with their ball flight, how many are showing a desire to effectively control their ball flight from left to right as well as right to left?

As Mr Hogan so aptly put it in the August 1987 edition of Golf Digest (previously presented on an earlier post) stating he never intentionally struck a straight shot, every shot in golf is going to move one way or the other so you better make sure you decide which way its going to move before you make the shot. Why play the toughest shot in golf when the shot either side of it is so much more reliable and ultimately controllable. I quoted Mr Toski this same statement with a response that startled as much as impressed me, he replied by saying the shortest distance between two points is dead straight, but Mr Hogan who Mr Toski had witnessed live in practice on numerous occasions says otherwise. Yes Paul but so few people truely know the correct procedure for hitting that straight ball, as so few truely take the time to explore the sensations that shape and create it. My argument exactly, now I must state I can't be in full agreement with Mr Toski as far as hitting the straight shot, it simply is the toughest shot in golf and one I simply can't imagine or even begin to feel in a truely creative golf swing.

I mean there's nothing creative about a straight line now is there!

Now Im not saying a shot so very close to it isn't possible, I strongly believe and have experienced many shots that are but I just can't accept the reliability of striving for such an outcome when the two shots either side of it provide such consistent rewards.

My passion for the true art of shot making lay with the means to effectively achieving it.

I can fully agree with the exploration of positive feelings as a powerful source of consistency within a sound and silky action, one free of broken pieces and pointless positional movements. But its how one should go about achieving and exploring these feelings that most concerns and excites me. Everywhere I look I see a shambolic array of poorly positioned players, all in search of the perfectly positional swing. I just don't accept a positive feeling can ever flower from a negative position, what you set is what you get!

My daily walk along the practice ground at the Miccosukee Championship revealed many interesting sights, almost 90% of the players I witnessed were positioned to produce a natural fade swing while everyone of them was working hard to create the feeling for the draw.

Attempting to feel and create a draw swing while fighting the feeling of a fade is a non starter, it can happen yes, but will it stand up to the rigor of the PGA Tour, I think not, the feelings will certainly never withstand the pressure of the highest order. For me the true essence of a pure swing combines a blending of all the individual elements that shape and direct it, and for this matter its essential the swing is swung exactly where the body is aimed to swing. Aiming the swing left and swinging right will only put even greater emphasis on the hands to square the clubface and save the shot, by no means a reliable form of swing and play.

Everyone of the players I viewed would benefit from the notion: AIM CLUBFACE/ HOLD CLUB/ AIM SHOULDERS/ SWING

In the simplest possible terms: The FACE and HANDS shape the shot while the BODY directs it.
From this simple logic we simply have to make a committed swing on the body line.
To swing on the body line when aiming perfectly square can become random if the player is unaware of the feelings and sensations required to do so. But from a perfectly balanced and neutral address position he now has the grounding to fully develope the positive feelings and sensations required to train and ingrain it. He has the best possible chance of executing that elusive straight shot.

But this is where I have issues. I would much rather see a player standing perfectly square and balanced to every shot before simply adjusting the body alignment to slightly open or closed but still square to one another with the feet, knees, hips and shoulders while keeping the clubface square to the target line at all times. From here the player simply has a greater chance of committing to the body line swing in the knowledge that the ball will certainly move back to the target providing the grip is neutral, the clubface is square to the target line and the ball starts left of it for the fade and right for the draw.

It becomes so much easier to commit to the body line when the body isn't demanding a precisely dead straight shot.

Think about how much easier it is to intentionally put hook and slice spin on the flight of your golf ball, easy isn't it?
So how easy is it to control the degree of movement you intentionally put on that ball flight?
Its much easier to limit the degree of movement than it is to totally eliminate it.
Through the correct respect and understanding of the perfectly square and neutral setup you have the potential to play with the shape and degree of ball flight movement through feel and awareness of everything both internally through sensations and externally through course shape, contour terrain and weather conditions.

Movements within the swing are the direct result of positions built before it.

Creative eXplosion/ Chart Hills 2008

The above shots are from a recent trip to Q School where I have just returned from caddying for our star pupil Darryn Lloyd. An exciting prospect with extraordinary ball striking ability, at 19 years of age he was sure to turn some heads and excite some imagination. Excite he sure did, turn some heads he did to, but more importantly he has confirmed to himself and seen first hand the current state of the modern game and the young players failing to conquer it.

From my own teaching angle I have written numerous pieces expressing my feelings towards current coaching techniques and there resulting effects on the game. The past week has provided a first hand experience of the result of such coaching and further highlighted the valued point of possibly the most important Teacher of our time, Mr John Jacob's, who so accurately wrote in his 50 Years of Golfing Wisdom;

I get the impression that many young players are making a conscious effort not to let the clubhead work in the hitting area. In other words, they are so keen on late hitting that they are never actually using the clubhead at all - despite the fact that hitting is surely the most natural thing to do with the clubhead, certainly more natural than trying to hold the clubhead back!

I must of seen at least ten players openly admiring the late hitting, halfway down position. Like Jacob's I have seen many players attempting to create a feel for that late hitting position, though I venture to say the great players never feel such a position, Darryn being one of them, the purest strikers feel a much more complete thing, that of swinging the clubhead through the ball to a target.

This years school was simply littered with players all freely discussing their own golf swings, but how many could actually say they had a swing, rather than just a set of many failing positions?

Darryn can safely say he has that swing and no one can touch it for purity of motion, speed of flow and unity through sound repeatable application of the basic fundamentals of the set-up.

WISE WEISKOPF

Simplicity breeds consistency.

Great golf is built on great shapes.

On viewing the worlds leading players we see certain common elements in all.
Those that perform to the highest level week in week out are those that produce the most consistently efficient shapes in the set-up. A neutral blending in the formation of the hands over a solid base and strong left side supported by a relaxed right.
Mr Weiskopf offers a classic example.

Once the golf swing starts whatever alteration or change there is in the golf swing is the result of movements. If these movements are correct in there proper order, time and place, the clubhead will strike the ball squarely at an accelerated force to drive the ball straight forward.

To perform naturally without need for compensation and recovery in these movements we must first respect the shapes that will position, time and pace them within motion. The simplest way to shape the swing is through the shape of your set-up.

'If you stand in a hole you better expect to swing in a hole!'

Great golf is about controlling the golf ball, controlling the golf ball is a matter of shaping the swing that propells it. If simplicity breeds consistency then simple shapes in the address will naturally shape and influence all elements of balance, equality of movement and speed of motion within the swing.

Focus your attention to the positions in the set-up and leave the positions in the swing to themselves, the swing is a reaction to a target not an ideal swing. How you shape your golf swing is a simple matter of how well you shape your address.

SWING = TURN = SHIFT

The most efficient, neutral address position will allow us to combine a consistently full shoulder turn over a stable right knee on the backswing with an aggressive forward swing in which the left knee leads everything else through impact. It sets up a swing that is simple and relatively free of extraneous, moving parts.

SIMPLICITY BREEDS CONSISTENCY.
